Whatsapp Chat on John's Seven Miracles of Jesus and their Significance

This is an excerpt from a Whatsapp discussion where a member asked why is the miracle of New Wine regarded as the first miracle when Peter’s miraculous fishing experience seemed to have happened earlier. Enjoy!

Joh 2:1-11
(1)  And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
(2)  And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
(3)  And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
(4)  Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
(5)  His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do [it].
(6)  And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
(7)  Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
(8)  And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare [it].
(9)  When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
(10)  And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: [but] thou hast kept the good wine until now.
(11)  This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

But Jesus caused Peter to catch much fishes that tore his nets, and there are thoughts this might have happened earlier because Peter started to follow Jesus after this, whereas in John, He was already a disciple.

Luk 5:1-8
(1)  And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
(2)  And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing [their] nets.
(3)  And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
(4)  Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
(5)  And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
(6)  And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
(7)  And they beckoned unto [their] partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
(8)  When Simon Peter saw [it], he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

Whatever is the case, it is understandable based on the purpose of John's Gospel clearly stated out...

Joh 20:30-31 KJV 30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Jesus did "many other" miracles

But John ended up telling us just 7 of them (some argue it's 8)
And with a reason

It's important to note that John didn't set out to give us some history, but to gather only stories that affirm the Messiah-ship of Jesus
This miracle is the first by which Jesus "manifested" publicly

I think it's right to say those other miracles are kind of "private".., such as Peter catching fishes, meeting Nathaniel, etc..
And we never recorded that there was a mass followership of Jesus because of them

Joh 2:11  This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

You have to look at it with the context of the entire book of John with respect to the essence of the book which is to make us believe that Jesus is the Christ and have life.

John assembled only 7 stories.. Stories that drive home the point, rather than getting the reader carried away.. He even numbered the first 2.
And each of the miracles had something significant it pointed at about Christ and the church..

In fact, it's interesting to note that John used the word "sēmeion", which means "signs" rather than “dunamis”, the proper word for “miracles, power, ability”

They are "signs" because the main aim was to point us to another thing.

For example, the last one - Lazarus, was to point us to Himself as the "Resurrection And the Life"

This was why each time He does a miracle (sign), He will later on hack (upbraid) His disciples like "guys, are you dull of hearing? Do you still don't perceive? Don’t you get it?".. Remember the bread story (though not in John)

Mar 8:15-21
(15)  And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and [of] the leaven of Herod.
(16)  And they reasoned among themselves, saying, [It is] because we have no bread.
(17)  And when Jesus knew [it], he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? PERCEIVE ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your HEART yet HARDENED?
(18)  Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
(19)  When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.
(20)  And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.
(21)  And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

Have you asked yourself what is there to “understand” or “perceive” in a miracle of bread?

Because the signs were to point another thing.

Remember when Nicodemus came at night, and said "no man can do these miracles (that word is semeion, signs), evidently referring to the miracle of the wine provision, Jesus next word would drift VERY FAR from anything physical drink… “Except a man be born again…”

Remember Jesus upbraided the man too that (Joh 3:10) Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?"

Like, this is something you ought to have grasped now as an elder in Israel…

Showing you the provision of new wine was a sign…

Nicodemus was a Jew…

He should know what the 6 water pots of the Jews purification meant

And how that when men were filled came the new wine which was incomparably better…

Anyway, thank God for Nicodemus ignorance. It made us see why Jesus used that sign

Remember when He said to Mary at first…

Joh 2:4 KJV Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

The "mine hour" refers to the hour of that new wine in the kingdom, that hour of resurrection… It hasn't come… But as a sign, Jesus wrought that miracle…

Joh 7:6 KJVLite Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

Joh 7:30 KJVLite Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

Joh 8:20 KJVLite These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

Joh 12:23 KJVLite And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

Joh 13:1 KJVLite Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

There's something about Jesus whenever He seem to talk "offpoint" like this... (I guess He learned it from the Prophets of the OT😜)

A problem will present itself. He will know He can handle it, but He will want His audience to look beyond a problem to THE PROBLEM… There's a problem, but there's The Problem.. One is temporal, the other is spiritual and eternal.
Very important!
Please read that paragraph above again.

Jesus will use every situation as an occasion to preach.

For example, He was told Lazarus was sick, watch what He said.

When Lazarus died, watch what he said.

When the people were hungry, He asked His disciples as if He didn't know what to do.

More examples

Joh 11:4 KJV When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

But the guy actually first died, and Jesus knew Lazarus will die😀

In fact, "this sickness is not unto death" fits perfectly for "not unto spiritual death" more, because when he eventually died, Jesus said "he sleepeth"

Joh 11:11 KJV These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

Again, Jesus talking "off topic".

Joh 11:23-25 KJV 23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. 24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

He kept switching between physical death and spiritual death.

He already healed a lame man at Bethesda... Without telling the man who He is

Then later appeared to him and said this

Joh 5:14 KJV Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

By "a worse thing", Jesus already switched again. What sin was the man committing that led to his 38yr infirmity and what can be worse than staying at a pool for so long and people keep getting their miracles ahead of you right before your very eyes?

He's saying, "Good that you are healed in the body, but better to be healed in the spirit". That only comes by the knowledge of the Son. Remember The lame man didn't even know Jesus yet, and that will lead to the "worse thing" ==> eternal damnation

Not everyone may agree with this explanation, but read up Jesus words after this, you'll know it's all about eternal judgement (the worse) and salvation (the greater thing).. It's OK…

See another instance... He saw a man "blind" with a special kind of blindness I've never heard of…
He was blind from birth.

Joh 9:3-4 KJV 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents... The moment you see this, know Jesus is about to go "off-point" again to quickly talk about His mission for the world... Because I bet you Jesus never meant to say his parents were holy or sinless…

but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

What is that work… It's not just material healing… It's about the greater blindness of the whole world! His problem with be an avenue to announce that there's finally a cure to our darkness. That's why the next thing was "I am the light of the world", not just "light of this blind man"

In case you need to know what Jesus defines as "work of God" in the book of john, just see this

Joh 6:28-29 KJV 28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God ? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

I bet you don't think this scripture means you don't have to join the workforce in your local assembly… So you don't go and tell people Jesus already said "work of God" means “just believe” It's Jesus going "offpoint" as usual…

👆Again, that scripture was Jesus answer after He had Miraculously fed the people and He was being quizzed to supply more bread... He switched the topic from bread and fish to "I am the bread of life", "eat my flesh" which actually meant to believe

In conclusion, we have seen how all of John's recorded conversation of Jesus had significant meanings, his miracles were a sign to point to the greater problem and Himself as the Greater Miracle which whoever rejects must expect the "worse thing". The study of the word is blessed!
