Holy Ghost Baptism: Common hindrances to receiving

I have prayed but I still don’t speak in tongues. What could be wrong with me?

1. Negative mindset

If you have a negative prejudiced mind about tongues-speaking, you could get sceptical or critical against it. You may read our article on The common misconceptions and negative bias people have about speaking in tongues. Such devilish doctrines pollute your mind such that even when you would have started to speak, you are “afraid” that you are not correct; or it seems to you that you are only trying to imitate some regular tongues you hear around. No! you are not imitating! Don’t be afraid yours isn’t so smooth as others, just go on!

Sometimes you are afraid and something tells you that you are saying rubbish and that you should better be “sincere with yourself” that if you don’t speak, you shouldn’t walk away in the pretence that you are already speaking when in truth, you were only saying rubbish. Kindly disregard thoughts like this.

2. Expecting heaven to fall to prove that God has really come down upon you

No! Only in Acts 2 do we have such mighty shaking, because that event was premier. But in you already is the Holy Ghost who will rather manifest in a still small voice than scatter the world because He wants to come upon you. Don’t look out for some wind, or some noise or shaking. No! Don’t even expect a fall. It doesn’t have to be in a mighty crusade by a mighty prophet. It is just like salvation: whoever it is that preached to you, and you believe, you are saved without a witness of thunderous voice from heaven, or a confirmation of a highly rated Seer of God.

3. “My sins must have been impeding me and making God to be far from me”

Well, while you shouldn’t regard iniquity in your heart (Psalm 66:18), and should not habour offenses, unforgiveness and unrepentance (Matt 5:23), I’ll say that it is by faith that you also receive forgiveness of sins. So please forgive yourself and move forward. Don’t let past misdeeds haunt you. Don’t let Satan through subtlety of self-condemnation deprive you of your privilege in Christ. God doesn’t have forgiveness issues like you do, let go. Open up your heart and receive the love of Christ.
One more thing, please don’t make vows to God to “sin no more if God can give you the Holy Spirit”. It is not needed! That you have not been living as righteous as you should have been is another reason why you must receive the ability to speak in unknown tongues. Therefore, never put yourself aside on the grounds of “I’m not holy enough for it”. Don’t shy away from what is meant to help your spiritual growth because you think you are not spiritually mature enough.

4. Fear of catching wrong spirits

Don’t be careful over much, friend! One thing is needful, focus on the right thing as you have been doing. Let not unbelief get in. You can’t ask God for original and He will give you the fake. He does not even have the fake. For every good gift and every perfect gift is from above! No variableness with Him. Alleluia!

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness nor shadow of turning. (James 1:17 MKJV)

I confidently assure you that you cannot catch a wrong spirit from God, and the devil cannot hijack the process as you wait on God.

5. “Maybe tongues is not for meant for me, my gift may be another”

No excuse friend! Don't conclude in frustration! It’s for “them that believe” (Mark 16:17), so don’t waver (James 1:6), don’t draw back (Heb 10:38). All that believed in Acts 10 spoke in tongues. All in Acts 2, did the same. All in Acts 19 did. So you cannot be an exception, unless you have judged yourself unworthy of this eternal life. 1Corinthians 12:30 that said “do all speak with tongues?” is not talking about this one you are praying for. He is talking about ministry gifts, but this that you are desiring is not ministry gift. It is an ability of everyone that is born again. So do not exclude yourself, you are one of us.

You can take the prayer again now in full assurance of your faith, you'll get results this time. God is faithful.
