It has nothing to do with denomination whether you are Orthodox or Pentecostal or whatever. You simply need to be a Christian to speak in tongues. You simply need to be of a bible-believing denomination, to accept the gospel message of which tongues-speaking is an indispensable part! You don’t become a Pentecostal because you have started to speak! You have not altered the fundamental doctrines of your church if you preach tongue-speaking except your church is not built on biblical doctrines.
Diverse experiences of people that have had to do with some so-called prophets of God might have made them to conclude in unbelief and hence derision of the gifts of God. But you could as well conclude there are no Christians on earth because all Christians around you have proven unchristianly. What a hell-bound hasty generalisation! Have you found fake gifts? It means there are original, and it’s with God! But you won’t ask God for original and He will give you the fake He does not have. God has no counterfeit! Nothing fraud-like is with him! Don’t let anyone poison your mind. Don’t let anyone beguile you. Don’t get offended. Offence produces nothing but a critical, cynical, unbelieving spirit. You are a believer, find out the truth and believe it!
Jesus himself said this:
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:17-18 KJV)
Again, some Dunamis-resistant people get over this scripture and say “new tongues” here does not mean unknown tongues. That it simply means a change of that organ called tongue as - if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. And there is a change of heart and of tongue. So believers will begin to speak good things, will put away corrupt communication from their lips. And what an unreasonable misinterpretation this is! How do I know?
Let’s read the text again, and observe the trend of happenings there.
Just a question for my reader: do any of the events sound ordinary?
cast out devils;
speak with new tongues;
take up serpents;
drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover
Do all not speak of the supernatural workings of miracle? Maybe you should go over it again. All speak of the exploits them that believe will do, and not of what will be done on them such as a change of tongue. So they shall speak with new tongues is the kind we see in Acts 2.
Not once did the apostles talk of how they’ve got a spiritual tongue transplant. In fact, Paul had to beseech the Roman church to present their bodies one of which was the tongue to the Lord a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1). He admonished the Ephesian church to put away lying and foolish jesting (Eph 4:25 5:4). Peter encouraged the brethren to keep their lips that they speak no guile (1Peter 3:10).
Some again say tongues-speaking is past and thus not for us. This argument is as cruel as saying the instruction in Mark 16:15-16 is past and not for us anymore. So we should also not go into the world to preach the gospel since “it’s not for us”. Tongues-speaking is so contemporary and will remain to be so.
This promise belongs to you and to your children and to everyone who is far away. It belongs to everyone who worships the Lord our God." (Acts 2:39 GW)
Swallow the humble pie, ask earnestly to receive this ability to speak in other tongues.
